To see their wharves, fishing fleets, thriving seafood markets and restaurants is to see what was, and in many cases still is, their principal reason for being - their very essence.

These cities and many of the small towns that link them along this jagged coastline - with its deep natural harbors and wind-whipped lighthouses - still give you the feeling that whalers and ivory merchants could sail into port at any minute.
