Harwich

Norwegian Fjords Cruises to Harwich

Harwich lies between the Stour and Orwell Rivers in central England. Harwich emerged on the scene in 1150 as a crowded and noteworthy town, and began to grow as fishermen and laborers flocked to the town for work. Once serving mainly as a gateway to the River Thames and as an industrial port for imports and exports, Harwich has blossomed over the decades into a wonderful tourist retreat known for its friendly residents and relaxed atmosphere.

Today, Harwich bustles with industry and a population of over 18,000. But it also boasts of quaint shopping areas, delightful eateries and the old world charm found in its many historical sites. Residents of Harwich take great pride in their land, and it shows. It is a modern day place that has seamlessly preserved its past in the form of landmarks and educational tours that allow visitors a look at Harwich's history. Harwich is known throughout England for the care its citizens take in maintaining the beauty of their surroundings. The commitment of the community is evidenced in the numerous social clubs and societies aimed at strengthening Harwich's close-knit feel. Crime is low here, and the sense of community continues to bridge generations, as young and old alike express an admiration for their town's interesting past and promising future.

Harwich locals have formed numerous groups, such as the Harwich Society, which work to sustain and restore popular sites like the lighthouses and various murals that adorn the town. Visitors to Harwich will face the pleasurable challenge of deciding which sites to see, and because there are so many, there is truly something for everyone. From the historic High Lighthouse to the Navyard Wharf, this quaint and elegant yet rustic and pastoral town will enchant you.

Cork

Norwegian Fjords Cruises to Cork

Cork is a wonderful little city located along the coast of the St. George's Channel off the shores of Ireland. It is a small town with a big heart, and one thing for sure, the scenery is beautiful. The picturesque landscape of Cork is absolutely amazing, and the few structures that do exist are tremendous. Cork is nestled in between two separate branches of the River Lee, and it is a quaint spot that is perfect for vacationing and relaxing. It is in the perfect location if you are interested in taking sightseeing trips in and around the city, and the town itself is quite compact, making everything easily accessible. Cork is the second largest city in Ireland, and the major trade center of the south. In total, there are 175,000 people who reside in Cork, and every one that I have come in contact with seems like a jolly bloke ready to tell a story and have a drink.

In 1185, Cork was officially established, but the city remained very small and insignificant for centuries. In the 17th century, rapid expansion began to occur, primarily because of the butter industry. The butter trade ensured prosperity for Cork in the 17th and 18th centuries, and these were good times for the small town that was on its way to becoming the premier city in southern Ireland. The River Lee divides Cork into two parts, and as a result, an astounding array of bridges and quays are laced throughout the city. Every view seems like a postcard photo, and even with a modest amount of activities, Cork remains incredibly exciting. The air is clean and crisp, and the mood is always right. The atmosphere throughout the city is a lively and energetic one, and simply walking around looking at the sights is enough to keep you from ever getting bored. A few of the restaurants in Cork are absolute gems, and the area in and around Paul Street features outdoor merchants selling all kinds of interesting items. The Shandon Steeple is a joy to climb, as you are welcome to ring the bells at the top, and this is only one of the highlights of this great city.

Glasgow

Norwegian Fjords Cruises to Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, and is, in fact, the third most populated city in Great Britain. A famous cruise ship destination, Glasgow is home to the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth, as well as other famous liners. The city, which was once characterized by slums and over-population, has undergone a tremendous restoration, ridding the gorgeous land of the shanties and decrepit buildings that once inhabited the region. Now only grand edifices and beautifully constructed museums stand. The people are friendly and helpful to travelers, and the countryside is simply magnificent. The parks, lush green land, and golf sites are some of the best in the entire world.

Glasgow is an ancient and magnificent city, with a rich heritage and prosperous future. The prosperity of the city, from a commercial point of view, began in the 17th century. This is much earlier than the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. When the two cities are compared, Glasgow is actually the much older, much more esteemed location. As the city grew, and the expansion was rapid, Glasgow began to overtake all of the smaller medieval towns in the vicinity. Soon enough all of the area around the great River Clyde was known as Glasgow.

It was only in 1996 that Glasgow finally gained its independence from the Strathclyde region of Scotland Glasgow had been controlled by outside government for centuries. Toward the end of the 20th century, the city became recognized as its own division. Therefore, Glasgow is no longer dependent upon the region of Strathclyde for assistance.

The city is a marvelous location for honeymoons, families, or plain enjoyment. It is a treat to the senses, and the region is so green that you cannot help but be overwhelmed, loving every second of it. The golfing is tremendous in Glasgow, as are the world-class dining options. The sense of adventure in Scotland is complemented by the tranquility of the area, and this creates a glorious vacation for you to enjoy.

Geiranger

Norwegian Fjords Cruises to Geiranger

Geiranger has been called the best fjord viewing location in Norway; a picturesque location full of sights that you will never forget. The landscape of Geiranger is remarkable, and everyone you encounter will be eager to help you while you explore the region. The people are quite friendly, but they do not want you to stay forever. Norway is not a melting pot, and it wishes to stay that way. Immigration is heavily discouraged through strict policies, and the entire country only averages around twenty people for every square mile of land. The weather is somewhat severe, as it is bitterly cold much of the year.

Some of the best skiing in the world can be found in Norway, and this sport, along with observing the gorgeous countryside, are the two main reasons for visiting Geiranger. There is not an abundance of activities or things to do, that's for sure. But you can still have a marvelous time enjoying the intrinsic beauty of the area. The Norwegian people are among the best educated in the entire world, and when the children are born they are taught to ski along with being taught to walk. Even with the icy weather, Norwegians spend a great deal of their time outdoors, and you will be expected to do the same if you visit Geiranger! This is definitely one of the last natural frontiers on the continent. Glaciers, lakes, and mountains cover over 70% of the land in Norway. Because of the peculiar length of the days and nights, Norway has been given the name Land of the Midnight Sun. The summer days can approach nearly 24 hours of straight sunlight, and in the winter the nights can last over 17 hours.

Bergen

Norwegian Fjords Cruises to Bergen

Bergen is a picturesque city in the gorgeous country of Norway. Located in the western region of this glorious land, Bergen is a beautiful and diverse area full of natural wonders. The museums are fantastic, and the Bergen Art Museum in particular is a real gem. The visual splendor of Bergen is remarkable, and you will never tire of this extraordinary city. The fjords are magnificent, and the longest fjord in Norway is Sogne, located just to the north of Bergen. Many of the old buildings in the heart of the city are beautifully constructed and are charming spots just waiting to be explored. The eating and shopping in Bergen are both excellent, as there are a number of high quality restaurants and stores to peruse. The jewelry and clothing in Bergen shops are extremely nice, and in some locations you will discover great hard-to-find items. A combination of natural and man-made beauty makes the Hanseatic Wharf area one of the most spectacular port areas in the world. Wherever you go in Bergen, you are sure to be amazed, and the waterfront of the city is particularly impressive.

King Olav Kyrre established Bergen as a Viking harbor in 1070. It was by far the most important port in all of Norway for import, export, and general usage. In the thirteenth century, Bergen was officially declared the capital of Norway. In 1241, the Hanseatic League was established in order to create monopolies on certain segments of European trade. Bergen joined forces with several German cities and became one of four main trading powers and one of the primary ports for salted fish and timber on the continent, making the area incredibly powerful and prosperous. This rich heritage has survived the centuries, and Bergen continues to be a thriving city. Just recently, it was declared one of the three tidiest cities in Europe, which is quite an honor indeed. If you like cleanliness, crisp air, and an abundance of sights and adventures, then Bergen is a perfect city for you. There is definitely a lot of rainfall in this port city, but you are sure to be cheered up by one of the friendly locals, who will insist that you join in for a laugh and a drink at one of the local hangouts.
